surgeon, proctologist, gastroenterologist

I graduated as a medical doctor from the Semmelweis University for Medical Sciences, Budapest in 1977. I became a consultant in general surgery in 1982 and was appointed an assistant professor of general surgery at the Postgradute Medical University, Budapest in 1985.

In early 1985, I began my activities in diagnostic laparoscopy and became a pioneer in this field in Hungary. In 1989, I qualified as a gastroenterologist. Between 1989 and 1993 I worked to develop and teach surgical laparoscopy, initiated the introduction of laparoscopic biliary surgery, laparoscopic colorectal surgery and other laparoscopic interventions in the surgical department. I guided more than 25 postgraduate hands-on animal experiments and theoretical lectures to teach surgical laparoscopy, and I also did an own research work with my team gaining PhD degree from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Following this, I became an associate professor of surgery.

I started my day surgery activities in Hungary as early as in 1997, establishing the Hungarian Association for Ambulatory Surgery (HAAS). As a founder, I disseminated the idea of day surgery in various medical fields in Hungary. As a result, day surgery became popular as a way of treatment. I also guided the HAAS to be a member of International Association For Ambulatory Surgery (IAAS) in 2005. I initiated the development of day surgery within the frame of a network of Middle and Eastern European countries. I was the organiser and president of the IAAS’s 10th International Congress For Ambulatory Surgery in Budapest. and also of IAAS’s 2nd European Congress. I served as president of the IAAS from 2015 to 2017.

I have 110 peer reviewed papers, gave more than 500 lectures nationally and internationally, wrote 17 chapters in books, and edited a book dedicated to day surgery. I established the first ambulatory surgery unit in Hungary in Budaörs, Hungary in 2004, where I helped introduce such new innovations as minimally invasive techniques in proctology.

I am a senior lecturer of day surgery in two universities for graduate and postgraduate resident students in the Semmelweis University, Budapest and the Debrecen University.
